I hear you have new details on the shocking scope of the US government_s spying habits.I do Peyton it turns out the feds were listening to many MORE phone calls much EARLIER than anyone thought. Here_s the story. The US government began eavesdropping on the phone calls of American citizens long BEFORE 911 This according to an exclusive report from USA Today. About 10 years before the terrorist attacks in New York City the Justice Department and Drug Enforcement Administration started a program that logged calls from the US to 116 countries linked to drug trafficking including Canada Mexico and most of Central and South America. Investigators say the system helped them track drug cartel distribution networks. The program provided the blueprint for the controversial National Security Agency surveillance that followed. Russian hackers managed to break into the White House A new report from CNN claims that hackers gained access to the White House_s computer system giving them confidential information that included President Obama_s day-to-day schedule. The hackers first breached the servers at the State Department and used that access to leapfrog their way into the White House system. It_s important to note that the incident is not new. It happened last year and White House officials are downplaying its significance. The US and Cuba are on the brink of taking another promising step towards improved relations The State Department is widely expected to remove Cuba from the government_s list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. The designation has been a diplomatic stumbling block between the two nations for years. President Obama has yet to confirm the development but an announcement could come as soon as this week. Isabella with President Obama_s historic trip to Cuba a new poll from CBS News and the New York Times shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans FAVOR re-establishing ties with the country. A similar number support ending the decades-long trade embargo. When asked if improving diplomatic ties would lead to more democracy for Cubans half of those polled thought it would make no difference at all. One area where it IS making a difference is on the economic front. With airlines about to make daily flights and some Cuban hotels being run by American companies CRUISE lines are getting in on the action. Cuban officials have given approval to Carnival Corporation the parent company of several major cruise lines including PRINCESS to start sailing to the island from Miami beginning in May. Port stops will include Havana Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. And Hulk Hogan has been awarded an additional 25 million dollars in his sex tape lawsuit against Gawker Media The jury handed the former wrestling champ the extra cash as PUNITIVE damages. That_s on top of the 115 million Gawker was ordered to pay LAST week for publishing the tape. Gawker is confident the ruling will be overturned on appeal claiming that the jury was not allowed to hear crucial evidence that would support their First Amendment claim. Other than the Super Bowl there have been a few big stories developing - so here_s our team to give you a taste of what_s to come. PP) All right folks - let_s get right to the biggest story of the day - the thing that everyone_s talking about - the Super Bowl. Rachel Simmons watched every second of the game and binged on wings and nachos so I_m sure she can tell you all about it. PP) What_s going on Rachel?RS) Wait a sec- are you saying you DIDN_T watch the game?PP) Ah well sort of. I watched Madonna lip-sync the half-time show. (said coyly) I didn_t miss anything did I?RS) Oh no not much JUST ONE OF THE BEST SUPER BOWLS THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN PP) (laughing) Well that_s why YOU_RE here i_m leaving it up to you to fill people like me IN RS) Ok well then get comfy cause this is going to take a while. RS) Like i said it was one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played and a large part of that was because of how it ended. The New York Giants and the New England Patriots were neck and neck down the stretch but with a minute to go in the fourth quarter the Pats were up by 2. Giants_ running back Ahmad (ah-MAHD) Bradshaw scored the go-ahead touchdown but SHOULD have tried to kill the clock by taking a knee at the 1-yard line His quick score gave Tom Brady and the Patriots plenty of time to try for one last dramatic drive. But they just couldn_t do it - the game ended with a Tom Brady Hail Mary that didn_t QUITE connect - but came oh so close Final score 21-17 Giants. And kudos to New York quarterback Eli Manning. He took home MVP honors. What a nailbiter I_ll have more Sports a little later Peyton back to you. Greece is making headlines once again because they_re still treading water and desperately trying to avoid financial ruin. Eila Adams has been watching this story unfold and joins us now with the latest. What_s going on Eila? EA) Peyton in a desperate attempt to avoid bankruptcy Greece is frantically trying to secure a 170-billion dollar bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Without the bailout they won_t be able to cover an 18.9 billion dollar bond repayment which is due on March 20th. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos (loo-KAHSS pah-pah-DAY-mohs) will be meeting with key cabinet ministers to try and come to some agreement on austerity measures. The parties backing his coalition are all vocal opponents of the spending cuts required to receive IMF funding. If Greece goes bankrupt the economic turmoil that follows could lead to the collapse of the Euro.EA) In an interview with NBC_s Matt Lauer ahead of the Super Bowl US President Barack Obama said that NOTHING is off the table when it comes to preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.INSERT CLIP-EA) Obama said he_s hoping to solve this crisis through diplomatic measures rather than through force. His comments come amid speculation that Israel may attack Iran as soon as this spring. He downplayed those fears telling Lauer that he didn_t believe that Israel had made up its mind on how to proceed. The US and EU have already imposed strict sanctions against Iran because of their nuclear program.Officials in Egypt will try 19 Americans and 24 others on charges that they illegally funded pro-democracy protesters. Among those being charged is Sam LaHood (la-HUHD) the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. One expert calls this move nothing more than a political witch hunt that has brought relations between the US and Egypt to an all-time low. The campaign against pro-democracy organizations has strained relations with the US threatening to freeze 1-point-5 billion dollars in aid. Our top story comes from The Hague where an alleged war criminal known as the Butcher of Bosnia is mounting his defense from a number of war crime charges. Victoria Sinclair and Erica Stevens join us now with a full report. Ladies?That_s right Eila. Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has finally gotten a chance to tell his side of the story.After nearly 13 years on the run Karadzic is facing 10 charges of genocide. This is your News off The Top.Karadzic is primarily standing trial for his role in the Srebenica Massacre - a widescale execution that killed 8-thousand Muslim men during the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990_s. During his first day of defense Karadzic denied the charges and claimed to be a tolerant man who had only wanted peace.He also said he did everything he could to reduce pain and human suffering during the war. He_s accused the media of exaggerating the number of casualties during the conflict. Authorities finally caught up with Karadzic in 2008 where he had been hiding in plain sight for the last 13 years. If convicted of the charges he could face life behind bars. More now from the fallout of last month_s terrorist attack on the American embassy in Libya. The assault killed a US ambassador and has become a hot topic in the US Presidential election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been quick to criticize Barack Obama_s foreign policies. On Monday Secretary of State Hilary Clinton deflected some of the blame by taking responsibility for the incident. Clinton went on to say that she didn_t want to get into any blame game and that the focus should now shift to tracking down the terrorists and bringing them to justice. Nevertheless political experts believe the Benghazi attack will dog the Obama administration for the duration of the campaign. We_ll finish up this first look at the headlines with some surprising political news out of Israel. Parliament there has voted unanimously to dissolve itself and hold an early general election next January. That_s almost a year earlier than expected.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for early elections last week mainly because his government was unable to pass a key budget bill which in turn would have resulted in unpopular spending cuts. Pundits expert a vicious 100-day election campaign and consider Netanyahu an overwhelming favorite to stay in office. There_s a lot to like about Netanyahu_s leadership. Israel_s economy has remained strong and he_s taken tough stances on foreign policy. And yes one of these would be the so-called ìzero optioni where all remaining 68 thousand American soldiers would be pulled by 2014.Another scenario would see between three and nine thousand U.S. troops staying behind after the combat mission ends. Although Fridayis meeting should see Karzai and Obama make headway on relations between both countries theyire not expected to lock down an official security agreement until later this year.
