According to the feds, murder rates dropped by 1-point-9 percent in 2011 and aggravated assault, robbery, and rpg were down nearly four percent nationwide. Criminologists call the numbers both significant and surprising, given the country_s current economic struggles. Experts attribute the drop in violent crime to an aging population, an increase in immigration, and a larger police presence from coast to coast. VS) The US Presidential election is just five months away, and a state that_s had more than its fair share of voting controversy is once again in the spotlight. The state of Florida and the US Department of Homeland Security have filed lawsuits against one another, over the sunshine state_s access to a government immigration database. For more on this developing story, let_s bring in Erica Stevens for the latest?ES) Vic, the state of Florida is looking to keep non-eligible citizens from casting ballots at the polls in November, and they claim they need access to the Homeland Security database to keep their records up-to-date and accurate. Federal authorities say the state_s efforts violate national voting laws, and are looking to quash Florida_s voter-purge in federal court. Last month, election officials in Florida say they found 26-hundred registered voters who were not US citizens. With the election just around the corner, federal authorities say the purge would take far too long to clean up, and would jeopardize the voting rights of thousands of lawful citizens in the meantime. ES) In other politically charged news, former Florida governor Jeb Bush has openly questioned the tactics of Tea Party leaders, and says that two of the Republican party_s most beloved figures - Ronald Reagan and Jeb_s Father, George Bush Senior- would have a hard time fitting in with the no-compromise conservatives running the GOP today. Speaking at a media breakfast in Manhattan, Bush said that both his father and Reagan had records of trying to accommodate voters on both sides. He also criticized the party_s approach to hot topics including debt reduction and immigration.
